A famous French dramatist Jean Racine once said, "life is a tragedy to those who feel, and a comedy to those who think." Our emotions are powerful. They can help us reach our highest aspirations, but left unchecked can lead to destruction individually and collectively as a society. Politicians want voters angry, anxious, and fearful. These emotions elicit strong responses, which aids them in getting elected.During election season the goal of politicians is to control and confuse, not inform, logically convince, or bring us together. If they can pull specific emotional levers they succeed in manipulating and dividing the country. Once under their control, we align into tribal factions divided against each other. This is happening right now in America. The tactics are deployed equally by both parties. We need to recognize the manipulations. If we don't become disciplined in recognizing the ploys and checking our emotions, the politicians, who control the levers of propaganda, will control us. This podcast discusses our emotions and how politicians use various mechanisms to control and manipulate our actions to win our votes and control our perceptions.
