Society needs more subversiveness and skepticism. I don't mean physical insurrection. I mean intellectual courage to challenge and question the power structures. The education system is failing in its role of creating an intellectually curious, critically thinking society. The meat-grinder approach with standardized exams and regurgitating textbooks or technical facts is hurting our country. We see this play out in public discourse every day. The topic is personal as it cuts across many of the subject areas I talk about in my podcast and intersects with my profession of teaching the humanities in the college classroom. The article, “Why Study Humanities? What I Tell Engineering Freshmen” by Professor John Horgan should be required reading for all teaching faculty, parents, and students, but especially for those of us teaching the humanities. It is not healthy for society to produce too many conformists, worker drones, and not enough free-spirited minds. A society of conformists or close-minded people too weak to respectfully, openly, consider opinions and ideas they do not agree with is a danger to democracy, greater than any foreign influence. #teaching #highereducation #politics #society #education
