In my first podcast after an extended break, I want to set out for consideration that it is time to stop wasting time, energy, frustration, and sanity engaging in meaningless political debate online or in-person.As a model, I use Musonius Rufus was a Roman Philosopher from the 1st century AD. He taught philosophy during the reign of Nero, a horrific ruler. Rufus was sent into exile in 65 AD but later was allowed to return to Rome after Nero’s death and lasted there under Vespasian until 71 AD until he was banished again, only to be brought back a second time. He understood better than most political turmoil, dissension, and political partisanship. It is a miracle he was not killed during the upheaval.Of course, we should always strive to understand and empathize with people we disagree with; however, Rufus points out that no matter how right or perfectly crafted an argument may or may not be if the other party is so blinded by partisanship or ego-driven, then, the best course of action is not to engage.I discuss the delicate balancing act of political disengagement, whom to disengage from, and how in many ways rather than being negative, disengagement can be the best thing for the long term for both parties.
