When I was a kid, I remember everytime something bad happened to me - from tripping and falling or accidentally breaking something - my grandmother would almost immediately say “phanra katlo” (Bengali for disaster avoided).

Her belief was that these little troubles were my guardian angel’s way of ensuring that the big disasters didn’t happen by ticking the disaster checklists of sinister agents with small misfortunes.

I have often wondered if that is true. I have also wondered whether the saying that “trouble is a blessing in disguise” is true.

This story of Micheal Phelps, that I first read in Prakash Iyer’s book - The Habit of Winning, seems to suggest that there is indeed truth in that saying. But I think what is important is to do the best we can under every circumstance.
