I am sure most of us have experienced that colleague who is awesome at his work but impossible to work with. Someone who may be a fantastic performer but also good at making the rest of us feel that we are just taking up too much space.
At Netflix they call them “brilliant jerks”. While in many other organisations these individuals would be both recognised and rewarded, at Netflix they are shown the door.
The same happens to the amicable nice guy who gets along with everyone but is an average performer.
This is one of the principles that makes Netflix not only the extremely successful organisation but also a great place to work.
Reed Hastings and Patty McCord stumbled onto the concept of “talent density” during a crisis and it changed the way they built the company.
