When I moved from my corporate role to that of self-employed, a lot of things I took for granted disappeared. A call from my office was enough to get even the most senior personnel of our vendors to drop everything and come for a meeting. I suddenly had to keep calling people’s secretaries multiple times to get an appointment.
In the past, I often got upgraded at hotels and airports. Ushered out of immigration lines and accorded VIP treatment in airports from Bangladesh to Brazil. I felt very proud at that time. I didn’t stop to think whether that respect or recognition was for me or the designation I held.
This story is a reminder for us to be cognisant of what comes to us because of who we are and what comes because of the position we hold.
