1 Samuel 21:1–6, 8, 10–15 NIV
Looking at the text today, It was clear that David didn’t need to go into detail of his journey with Ahimelech. He didn’t need to explain to him that Saul was after his life - he needed to be discrete.
What is discretion? Discretion is the quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid revealing confidential information. (Source: Google).
Discretion is a very important trait one needs to learn as we take on important positions. Like David being the king of Israel. There would be too many situations where discretion is required, and if it’s not a trait one has already imbibed, we wouldn’t be able to do so in those situations, and the repercussions of not being discrete can be very significant. For example, imagine if Mary was not discrete and told everyone she was pregnant with Jesus - Herod would have ensured that never happened! Or perhaps God gives you an idea, and while you are battling with internal doubts, you tell people and even solidify the doubts, and eventually kill the dream? revealing things too early can jeopardise their manifestation of it - the cost of it! can be enormous!
In our world today, we need to learn and exercise the act of discretion. Not everything is meant to be said, especially on social media, which is only a button away. We need to understand what to disclose, if we need to, and when and how to disclose. Whether it’s confidential information, an event, a situation, a process, a season, or God's revelation. We need to learn the act of discretion.
God help us.
