Genesis 46:2–5, 26:1-5 NLT
In the scriptures, there were two famine situations in the life of Isaac and Jacob and God gave two different instructions.
For Isaac, God asked him not to go down to Egypt but stay in the foreign land and He will make his descendants as numerous as the stars. For Jacob, God told him to go down to Egypt and He will make them a great nation in Egypt.
Two similar situations but different instructions from God, in Isaac’s time it was too early to go to Egypt but in Jacob’s time God had already sent Joseph ahead to make a way for the Israelites for the appointed time.
It could have been easy for Jacob to assume that since God had told his father to stay not go down to Egypt, it should apply to him as well. But thankfully he asked for guidance.
This goes to show us that it is very important to seek guidance from God in every situation. God may instruct you to not go today and when the situation presents itself again the instruction may be to go.
