1 Samuel 15:20–29 NIV

Today we see how God rejects one and exalts another.

Saul was the first king of Israel, and Samuel described him as the most handsome man in Israel—so clearly he had the befitting looks for a king! But that was not enough to sustain him as King of Isreal.

Saul’s problem was his heart.

His heart was not submitted to God, and he kept submitting to his own will and desires.

He may have been equipped in looks and skill but not in character, and it is character that is required to maintain the position.

The refining process is so important, it’s where we build character. We will see that David went through serious rigour to prepare himself for the position of King even after being anointed as King of Israel.

In every key leadership position, it is character that will sustain us in that position. So let God do the work in us to build the character to sustain us in those positions.
