Today, we continue discussing the story of Joseph and we focus on Jacob's leadership style. Jacob was the leader of his household, with everyone seeking his approval. But Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons which lead to a rift between the brothers and the eventual separation of Joseph from the family for years.
As leaders, people we lead watch us very closely, in many cases learning from us and seeking our approval. We have to be careful to not show preferential treatment which may lead to rifts in our various teams, families, organisations etc.
Side note - Israel and Rebecca ( Jacob's parents) both had preferential treatment of their sons - Jacob and His twin Esau, which eventually led to a rift between Jacob and Esau and eventual separation of the brothers .. another case of repeated situations..
Bible verse: Genesis 37:1-4
1Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
2 This is the account of Jacob’s family line.
Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate[a] robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.
