1 Samuel 21:1-6 NIV; Matthew 12:1-7
Ahimelech offered David concentrated bread, which, ceremonially, was only meant for the priests to eat. By doing so, Ahmilech prioritised David’s need for survival over religious or ceremonial practices. In the Old Testament, following the law was key. There were so many religious laws to follow, which made God's people fearful of Him. So Ahimelech's decisions would have been huge at that time, as it may have resulted in repercussions.
Others would not have offered the sacramental bread, come what may, to obey the laws. This was the attitude of the Pharisees (Matt 12:1–7); they believed in following the law no matter what, even if it was harming the people, and they even confronted Jesus when He and the disciples were caught eating on sabbath against the law. They were so focused on the law, as they saw it as the only way to God.
As a reminder, Christianity is both a relationship and a religion. The most important is our relationship with God—by definition, the way in which we are connected to God. Religious practices were created to foster our relationship with God, so religion was created for man, not man for religion.
We should always put our relationship with God first in every way. It can take a conscious effort to do so, especially if we have a religious background that has been intertwined with culture. The focus should remain God.
Relationship with God always supersedes religion. Let this be our focus.
