Genesis 46:31 - 47:8Β
The occupation of the Israelites was shepherding and was regarded as an abomination to the Egyptians. In a typical situation of such a large family migrating to another country, they would have been focused on acceptance into a new community and because abomination was detestable they would have most likely considered doing something else to be able to fit in. But God had called them to stand out and Joseph saw this as an opportunity instead, and to be able to settle his family in the best of the land Goshen.Β
Further into the story, we see that the Israelites profited from the famine because as the famine became very severe, the Egyptians had to sell their livestock for food in one whole year to Pharaoh - thereby increasing their capacity as shepherds.Β
