1 Samuel 18:12–27 NIV

As David triumphed and had relevance over Saul in many ways, King Saul feared David as he knew the Lord was with him and so became jealous and afraid of David. He was so focused on killing David that if he couldn’t stop, even to the point of sending him on a tough battle to be killed. But in everything, David was successful—that even made Saul more fearful.

Now with the fear… the suggestive evil thoughts became enticing. Saul kept scheming on how to treat or kill David.

Saul was carrying too much weight! He probably thought he was dealing with David, but meanwhile he was pulling himself down, living in constant anxiety and fear.

Like Saul, we may be carrying weight. Perhaps for us, unlike Saul, our actions may be justified; we may be hurt and so believe to respond out of love, but by focusing on this, are we not carrying weight that God didn’t send us to carry? Are we responding out of love?

The right response to fear is love, nothing more or less.

God help us... We can’t necessarily do this in our own strength.
