1 Samuel 24:1-7
As Saul pursued after David with his men, he came to a cave and decided to rest there, unknown to him that David and his men were at the far end of the cave. When David’s men saw this, they said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish." I Sam 24:4. They were glad that their “Saul” was finally in their hands.
But it was a test! A test of David’s submission to God: would David submit to God's will and not touch His anointed or submit to his wants and everyone else’s around him to end the season and be the king of Israel?
David went as close as cutting off a piece of Saul’s cloth, and immediately lost his peace, a sign that he wasn’t following God, and then immediately stopped it. He said to himself, I cannot touch God’s anointed. He also stopped his men, who were so keen on their own freedom, from taking Saul’s life.
This was a very tough test; it was so easy to end it all, and it seemed like an opportunity of a lifetime. But David still submitted to God's will.
Tests can be difficult—so tempting, I must say—that they may look like the breakthrough we have been waiting for. It does take the grace of God to continue to submit to His will.
May we not take a test as a breakthrough, in Jesus name. Amen.
