In this episode of our "Good Question" series, we explore three ways we can have assurance that we are truly Christians.
Key points:
- Before discussing assurance, the pastor addresses the concern that eternal life might be boring or overwhelming
- C.S. Lewis' description of heaven in "The Chronicles of Narnia" depicts it as an exciting, never-ending adventure where each chapter is better than the last
- The first way we can know we are Christians is by looking at the promises in God's Word, such as John 3:16 and 2 Corinthians 5:21
- The second way is by considering the historical events of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, which provide the basis for our faith
- Just as a wedding certificate and photos provide evidence of a marriage, the biblical accounts of Christ's work on our behalf give us confidence in our salvation
- The third way is by examining our own experience and looking for the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23)
- While some may fear that becoming a Christian will change them, the changes the Holy Spirit brings are positive ones like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and self-control
Ultimately, our assurance as Christians rests on the trustworthy promises of God's Word, the finished work of Christ in history, and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our own lives.
Join us next time as we conclude our exploration of what it means to come to saving faith and have confidence in our relationship with God.
