A situation where the hero does not have all the information. Because the information has been withheld the hero doesn't know what he should have done. In the case of Oedipus, his parents are given a terrible prophecy about him but decide to put the onus of his fate back to the Gods. A series of unfortunate eventsleads the hero to a terrible and eventful climax.
