I don't know if you can relate to this, but I remember a number of years ago when I was starting out in business, I was so afraid of looking at my accounts that I simply wouldn't. It terrified the heck out of me. To the point where I'd just rather stick my head in the sand and forget about it. 

Over the years, I've learned how important it is to get a grip on your numbers. It's not always peachy, but that's business. We just need to take the good with the bad and make sure that we're putting enough away that we can make it through the 'flatter' periods.
