Sweet and southern, Kathleen is not only one of the most honorable and upstanding 92 year olds you’ll have the chance to meet, she’s also honest and forthright with a strong sense of living her life to the fullest.

Kathleen recounts her life as a child during the Great Depression, an era that is hard for many of us to comprehend for the year we live in currently.  Her mother passed away when she was only 2 years old and left her father with the responsibility of raising herself and eight other siblings on his own.  Finding this task to be too much for him with a heavy life he had filled with his own personal demons, her father gave her brothers up to Baptist Orphanages and then walked to their property line and handed her over the fence to their neighbors one day and simply said “you want this baby girl?”

The gift of Kathleen’s adoptive family brought her much love and immeasurable opportunities to experience life within a stable household.  She was able to attend school and go on to college in a day and age where the women’s movement and segregation was in the height of the country.

Marrying a World War II combat veteran, they went on to adopt two beautiful babies of their own before having their third child naturally.  Raising three children in the 1960s was an experience that brought many challenges for Kathleen all the while her husband was experiencing PTSD for years after his military service was completed.

Kathleen is my mother-in-law.  Her story is remarkable when I sit and think about it.  Her will to survive, to battle numerous bouts of physical setbacks, and to overcome obstacles many of us will never have the knowledge of understanding is a testament to her longevity.  She will forever be one of the most beautiful souls I have ever encountered.
