Have you ever created something and, somewhere along the way, realized you were actually working something out inside yourself?
Maybe it was writing, music, painting, photography, filmmaking, or even something as simple as putting your thoughts on paper. We often think of creativity as something we do because we’re “creative.” But what if it’s so much more than that?
Timothy Kiley, award-winning filmmaker and producer, joins me to talk about his creative process, his path, and the unexpected detours along the way that ultimately led him into an abundant career of following the unfolding.
Tim believes creativity really can be how we process what we’ve lived through and I couldn’t agree more. It’s such an integral part of our humanness! Creativity gives us a way to explore the things we’ve experienced, make meaning from them, and sometimes understand the things we simply don’t have words for yet.
Tim shares his personal story of this unfolding, from the weekend of 9/11 to where he finds himself today. Along the way, he shares how so many of life’s experiences become metaphors for life itself, revealing opportunities and possibilities we may never have recognized while we were in the middle of them, even in the painful moments.
And maybe that’s where creativity can step in and serve such a sincere purpose. It can help us look at our experiences differently, find meaning in our stories, and discover things about ourselves that might have otherwise remained hidden.
Tim talks about the courage that can come with creating something and actually letting other people see it. There’s a certain bravery to put it out here, to take something that came from inside of us and allow someone else to experience it, interpret it, and perhaps even find a piece of their own story within it.
Tim’s perspective reminds me that creativity isn’t just about talent and it certainly isn’t something reserved for artists. It can be a way of connecting, communicating, healing, questioning, remembering, and understanding ourselves a little better as we move along our path.
So maybe the question isn’t whether you’re a creative person…
Maybe the better question is what are you already creating…and what might it be trying to tell you?
Everyone has a story, and every story matters; let's make your story count!
