In the 11th Velvi discourse (2001), Gurumahan guides seekers toward a subtle inner inquiry, discovering the silent witness that abides through waking, dream, and deep sleep.
You do penance for others. Does it give you joy, hope, or experience? If not, you cannot stay committed to meditation. Sometimes, in a single day during the Holy penance, people have deep experiences, forget hunger and thirst, and even fall asleep without knowing where they are. Gurumahan jokingly adds sleeping during meditation is a higher state of bliss. We are the ones who experience that bliss. But to realize it, we need awareness, and that awareness must remain even during sleep. We know when we eat, bathe, study, or play. But do we know when we sleep? Many people do not realize they are dreaming. Only after the dream ends do they understand it was a dream. While dreaming, the dream world feels real.
