How does someone become part of pickleball history from the very beginning and continue shaping the game for nearly five decades?
In this episode, Pickleball Hall of Famer Steve Paranto shares his extraordinary journey through the history of pickleball, from competing in the very first Pickleball Championship in 1976 to becoming the longest-running tournament player in the sport. Steve talks about discovering pickleball while playing college tennis at Green River Community College, how he and his doubles partner quickly realized they had a knack for the game, and what it was like to compete in those early tournaments when wooden paddles, gym floors, and a much smaller community defined the sport.
Steve also reflects on his family’s remarkable role in pickleball history, including how his father, a Boeing engineer, designed the first composite pickleball paddle after noticing that the original wooden paddle-to-ball ratio was all wrong. He shares stories about his father’s creativity, sportsmanship, and Hall of Fame legacy, along with the heartfelt meaning behind having his dad’s ashes placed under the courts at the Paranto Playhouse, where Steve now teaches, hosts friends, and continues growing the game.
Along the way, Steve opens up about his life as an athlete, PE teacher, ventriloquist, inventor’s son, coach, and ambassador for pickleball. He talks about the evolution of the game, the importance of preserving its social spirit, and why pickleball remains such a powerful fountain of youth for players of every age. This is a joyful and deeply meaningful conversation about pickleball history, Steve Paranto, the first pickleball championship, composite paddles, pickleball instruction, the Hall of Fame, healthy aging, sportsmanship, community, and the life lessons that come from doing what you love for a lifetime.
