School Board, Friend or Foe?

Alison Furno and Debi Vandenboom are joined by special guest Amy Carney, Scottsdale Unified School District board member. Amy is a mother of six who woke up to the importance of engaging with her local school board during COVID and was elected in the last local election to serve on the board.

Amy explained what a school board does and what is the role of a board member.  Alison, Debi, and Amy discussed some of the difficult battles around the country over curricula and policies in schools and how conservative board members are often outnumbered and therefore find it difficult to make changes. They also discussed the importance of standing for truth in love as well as supporting and working with teachers.  Finally, they discussed how being engaged at the local level, like attending and paying attention to school board meetings is a simple way to get involved and take an important stand for the future of our children.

Action item:  Google your local district to find when and where school board meetings are held as well as contact information for your board members.
