A growing addiction to the emotion of Schadenfreude, the experience of pleasure in another person’s misfortune or harm, is threatening to erode our capacity for empathy, compassion, and common purpose. In this episode we explore how tribalism, polarization, cognitive biases, and media have supercharged the potential dark side of Schadenfreude and what we can do to protect our capacity for empathy and shared humanity.
