Understanding Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer's Elbow)
- What is Medial Epicondylitis?
- Definition: Medial Epicondylitis is painful inflammation of the bony bump on the inner side of your elbow. The medial epicondyle, located on the inner side of the elbow, is where wrist-bending muscles attach.
- How Does it Occur?
- Overuse Injury: Almost like a protest from your muscles, overuse of wrist-bending muscles leads to medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow)
- Common Culprits: Activities like golf, overhead throwing sports, baseball, and javelin can trigger golfer's elbow.
- What are the Symptoms?
- Elbow Pain: Golfer's Elbow causes pain on the inner side of the elbow and along the inner forearm when bending the wrist.
- How is it Diagnosed?
- History and Physical Exam: Diagnosis involves finding tenderness at the medial epicondyle.
- How is it Treated?
- Ice: Apply ice packs to reduce inflammation, but not more than 20 minutes to avoid ulnar nerve damage
- Elevation Trick: Elevate the swollen elbow for relief.
- Support Squad: Use an elastic bandage and a tennis elbow strap for support.
- Returning to the Performance
- Switch to activities that won't aggravate the elbow.
- Medication and Exercises: Anti-inflammatory meds, and elbow exercises may be prescribed.
- Surgery is an option for severe cases.
- Prevention Strategies
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to any discomfort in your elbow.
- Strap It Up: Wear a tennis elbow strap and perform elbow stretches regularly. This changes the leverage of how the muscles of the forearm pull.
- Elbow Exercise Routine
- Stretching and Strengthening: Engage in simple exercises to maintain elbow health, possibly under the guidance of physical therapy
