Title: Come On, Man — You Can Do Better Than That!

Scripture Text: Proverbs 27:17

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

The phrase “Come on, man!” is really just a natural, conversational expression that means:

·       “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

·       “You can do better than that!”

·       “Don’t give up — step it up!”

It’s been part of American slang since at least the 1960s–1970s, used in friendly teasing, sports, and everyday frustration — a way to challenge someone without hostility.

·  Former NFL players and commentators like Chris Berman, Keyshawn Johnson, and Tom Jackson began using “Come on, man!” as a recurring segment.

·  They would show funny football blunders or mistakes, and after each clip someone would exclaim, “Come on, man!”

In a Christian preaching context, “Come on, man!” takes on a whole new, powerful dimension.

It can mean:

·       Wake up and step up!

·       You’re better than what you’re doing!

·       God’s calling you higher!

🔑 1. Come On, Man — Step Up Spiritually

📖 Joshua 24:15

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve;
whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood,
or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell:
but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua made a public declaration — “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
A real man leads from his knees, not just his wallet.
Leadership begins at the altar.

Illustration:
A car with no driver still crashes even with a full tank. A home with no spiritual head drifts even when bills are paid.

Challenge:
Be the spiritual thermostat, not just a thermometer. Set the temperature of your home in prayer.

💪 2. Come On, Man — Stand Up Morally

📖 Psalm 1:1–3

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor standeth in the way of sinners,
nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,
that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;
his leaf also shall not wither;
and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

Morality isn’t weakness — it’s strength under control.
Joseph (Genesis 39:9) said,

“How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

He refused sin and gained success. Integrity made him valuable.

When God allows heat, He’s purifying you, not punishing you.

🤝 3. Come On, Man — Strengthen Your Brother

📖 Proverbs 27:17

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

Real men don’t compete — they complete.
You can’t sharpen yourself; you need another man.

Example: Nathan and David (2 Samuel 12:7–9)**

“And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man.
Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel,
and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom,
and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah;
and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and suc
