📘 Genesis 24 – The Covenant Passed to the Next Generation: Isaac & Rebekah

(Part 24 in the “God Keeping Covenant” Series)

🌟 INTRODUCTION

Genesis 24 is a beautiful story of faith, guidance, prayer, and covenant continuity.

Abraham is now old, blessed in everything, and ready to secure a wife for Isaac — the covenant son.
Isaac cannot marry a Canaanite woman because the covenant must remain pure.
So Abraham sends his oldest, most trusted servant (traditionally thought to be Eliezer) back to his homeland to find a wife chosen by God.

This chapter teaches us:

Theme: God keeps covenant by guiding His people into divine connections that fulfill His promise.

Genesis 24:1–4 – Abraham Makes His Servant Swear

Abraham makes his servant swear not to take a wife for Isaac from the Canaanites.

“You shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

Covenant Lesson:

Covenant marriages matter — because they shape future generations.

Genesis 24:5–9 – The Servant’s Concern & Abraham’s Faith

The servant asks, “What if the woman will not follow me?”

Abraham responds:

“The LORD… will send His angel before you.”

Covenant Lesson:

Where covenant purpose exists, God sends angelic assistance.

Genesis 24:10–14 – The Servant Prays for a Sign

At the well, he prays a specific prayer:

“Let the woman who gives me and my camels drink be the one You have appointed.”

Ten camels can drink 200–300 gallons, so this was no small act!

Covenant Lesson:

God honors specific, faith-filled prayers.

Praying for guidance not in general terms but with clarity — “Lord, open the right door and close the wrong one.”

Genesis 24:15–21 – Rebekah Appears Before He Finishes Praying

Rebekah arrives with a pitcher.
She is beautiful, pure, kind, and hard-working.
She offers to draw water for all his camels.

Covenant Lesson:

God answers prayer before we finish praying (Isaiah 65:24).

Genesis 24:22–28 – The Servant Blesses Rebekah

He gives her bracelets and a ring, and asks about her family.
When she confirms she is from Abraham’s family, he worships God.

Covenant Lesson:

Covenant gratitude gives God glory immediately.

Genesis 24:29–33 – Laban’s Hospitality

Rebekah’s brother Laban meets the servant and offers hospitality after seeing the jewelry.

Covenant Lesson:

When God’s hand is on your life, favor follows you.

Genesis 24:34–49 – The Servant Tells the Entire Story

He recounts:

Covenant Lesson:

Testimony confirms God’s will.

Illustration:

Sharing how God guided you strengthens faith and confirms direction.

Genesis 24:50–58 – The Family Agrees & Rebekah Says “Yes”

They agree:

“The thing comes from the LORD.”

Rebekah herself chooses to go.

Covenant Lesson:

Covenant requires willing participation, not pressure.
