It's funny how stories from the distant past become clearer as we grow older, wiser and more experienced. This week, the Aurora High School Class of 1979 lost another classmate--Jeff Thach. Fortunately, we were able to see him in the fall when he showed up for some of our 45th reunion activities. I never thought about that being the last time we would hug his neck.
This week--I talked about my favorite things this week on Facebook. My favorite things are my tribe, my circle, my people--if you will. I decided long ago you just can't have too many friends (or shoes), but friends are way more important.
This week's podcast and newspaper column is dedicated to a pal from my childhood: Willa Faye Hubbard. I don't get to see her or talk to her as often as I'd like, but her folks were always good to me and we shared many a popsicle back in the day.
Out of a 60-plus year friendship, we only had one bad day that resulted in her, for some reason that I most likely totally deserved, ground my Tiger Tooth Decoder PF Flyer Whistle into the dirt. I had owned it less than two hours.
Easy come. Easy go. I'm truly blessed.
Friends are worth more than any ol' whistle.
