At Texas Tech University commencement this past June, a service dog named Sadie was invited to walk on stage and receive her own diploma, alongside her owner, graduating senior Makaela Muse. Muse adopted Sadie and trained her as a service animal when she was diagnosed with a genetic disorder after starting college. Sadie helped get her master through school. I love that the Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec came up with the idea of recognizing the service dog. He awarded Sadie a ribbon-wrapped bone as a “special treat for a sweet doggie.” Muse was most pleased that the university recognized her service dog. She confessed that “Sadie’s honestly smarter than I am most days.” Who do you need to recognize and encourage today?
