October is World Menopause Month and an opportunity to get educated, find resources, guidance and support.
Menopause does not HAVE to be bad. In fact, ti can be a great opportunity to take back control of your health.
Menopause is the last day of the 12th month of no menses.
Perimenopause is when the ovaries start to shut down and hormones start changing and can last between 3-15 years,
After the ONE DAY of menopause./ You are POST menopause, until you die.
Typical symptoms you hear are hot flashes and night sweats, brain fog, difficulty sleeping, chronic fatigue, joint pain, muscle aches, weight gain and incontinence.
Not-so-"typical" are itchy ears, itchy, dry skin and weird, dry patches. Hives, ringing in the ears, metal taste in the mouth, cold flashes, migraines, digestive issues, heightened histamine response, dry eyes, hair thinning and falling out, vaginal dryness, pain during sex, loss of libido, sadness, depression etc.
Remember, that hormones control everything. They are command centre. When the signals get mixed up, of course it’s going to throw the ship off course.
Risks associated with menopause are osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, metabilic disorder and alzheimers.
What can we do about it?
#1 EXERCISE and more than cardio. Focus more on building muscle and lifting heavy shit. Muslce is the #1 indicator of an effective metabolism, protects your bones, is good for your heart AND helps you to metabolize (use) sugar more efficiently for energy.
#2 Protein. You can NOT build muscle efficiently without ample amount of protein. It also helps you to manage blood sugar better and keep you fuller longer.
#3. Rest. DO NOT OVERTRAIN/exercise! Too much exercise can increase Cortisol levels and cause weight gain.
#4. Reducing stress – This helps to manage Cprtisol levels as well as reduce your chances of developing heart disease and cancer.
#5. Be patient. You have never "done" menopause before and please don't stop eating well and exercising if you don't see the scale move. There are many other good reasons to keep going!
If you need more support, I have a private FB group – Strong Women over 40 AND and I am happy to chat with you but how I can support you as well.
