On this episode of Musical Miles, we welcome Silverada — the band formerly known as Mike and the Moonpies — now stepping into a new chapter with renewed ambition and a name that reflects their evolving sound. At the heart of it all is Mike Harmeier, a true Texan through and through.
Born and raised in the Lone Star State, Harmeier cut his musical teeth playing the dancehalls and honky-tonks around Austin and beyond, putting in marathon nights of live sets that taught him how to read a crowd and never let momentum drop.
He comes from a working-class background, helping in his father’s electrical and odd jobs, and carries that blue-collar grit into his songwriting — stories of “Paycheck to Paycheck,” of men and women trying to make something of their lives, of home and the road.
When Harmeier formed Mike and the Moonpies in his early 20s, it wasn’t just a band — it was his way of giving voice to the Texas dancehall tradition he loved and the real lives he saw around him.
Now with Silverada, he’s not leaving those roots behind — he’s reaching deeper into them, while also pushing forward into new sonic territory.
So in this conversation, we dig into what it meant for Mike to grow up in Texas, how those formative years shaped his art and ambition, and how it all converges in the bold new direction for Silverada.
