It was great speaking with Dr Yvon Guest - Psychodynamic Counsellor, author and educator. She works with a diverse client base, mainly Black and minority ethnic and LGBTQ. She worked for many years in the independent sector, where she developed a passion for facilitating the empowerment of society's most oppressed and marginalised individuals. This along with her own experiences as a care leaver, led her to undertake a PhD on the themes of resilience and trauma, which she now incorporates into her counselling work.
In our conversation Yvon touches on a variety of issues, including; identity - particularly her experiences as someone of mixed heritage, her childhood and adolescence and early adulthood, the challenges faced by her clients, target driven practice.
Be warned Yvon drops a couple of F bombs along with immense wisdom. Yvon's authored work includes a chapter in a recent publication: "Black Identities and White Therapies" Ed. by Divine Charura and Colin Lago (2021) - 'Developing a diversity-sensitive psycho-social approach to working with mixed-race people'.
