This is the album where Springsteen stops romanticising his characters and starts standing beside them. The streets, factories and highways are still here, but they’re no longer backdrops for myth. They’re places where people live, age, compromise and keep going. Darkness on the Edge of Town reframes Springsteen’s world as unmistakably working class, and it does so without condescension or despair. Its central tension is not between hope and hopelessness, but between living fully and merely surviving.
