In Rainbows succeeds because Radiohead stopped trying to outrun themselves. Liberated from self-imposed pressure to constantly innovate, they created something that felt almost shockingly humane — an album where warmth, wit, and even romance emerged from a band not typically associated with any of those qualities. The glacial distance that had characterised their recent work melted away, replaced by something that actually invited their audience in rather than keeping them at arm's length.
