Yeezus arrived not as a victory lap from one of hip-hop's biggest stars, but as a deliberate act of provocation — 40 minutes of abrasive industrial noise, minimal production, and deliberately offensive lyrics wrapped in blank CD packaging that rejected every conventional wisdom about how major artists should operate. The album's controversial elements — its use of deliberately offensive imagery, its appropriation of sacred cultural artifacts, its graphic sexual content — generated justified criticism but also served a purpose. West seemed intent on embodying the racist stereotypes applied to black men, playing the role of the hypersexual, violent, out-of-control figure that white supremacy had constructed, then forcing listeners to confront their own complicity in those stereotypes.
