Christmas Eve brings wonder, but it also brings clarity: the manger stands because the cross was necessary. We open 1 Corinthians 1:18–31 and walk through why Paul calls the message of the cross “folly” to some and the “power of God” to others, then connect that tension to the heart of the gospel. God is righteous and the rightful judge; we are unrighteous and unable to repair what we’ve broken. That’s why Christ came—not to polish our efforts, but to redeem us through a sacrifice only he could offer.
Together we challenge the instinct to treat faith as self-improvement. If wisdom, signs, or moral effort could save, there would be no need for the Son to suffer. We unpack propitiation in plain language: Jesus bears the wrath our sin deserves, cancels our debt, removes the blot, and credits his righteousness to us. That exchange means justification is a gift, not a wage. Only God can declare us righteous. Only Christ qualifies as the perfect Redeemer because he is holy, righteous, and God.
This conversation aims to comfort and confront. Comfort, because God’s love is greater than we can comprehend—he sends his Son to make enemies into family. Confront, because the cross humbles our pride and exposes the limits of human wisdom. We celebrate Christmas Eve by seeing the manger and the cross as one story of rescue, where justice and mercy meet, and where the weakness of God proves stronger than our strength. Listen, reflect, and share with someone who needs hope today.
