Chapter 9 of the Gospel of Matthew begins with Jesus and His disciples returning from the other side of the Sea of Galilee and arriving back in Capernaum, the central hub of His ministry. Matthew gives an account of a group of men who bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus for healing. Jesus responds to the unwavering faith of these friends in a surprising way. First, He forgives the man's sins and then heals his broken body. The power and authority of Jesus to do both - forgive and heal - were on display for all to see. There were many witnesses to this miracle: the friends, the crowds and the religious leaders.
