We got into the whole “obesity gene” narrative that’s popping up everywhere lately, including Oprah’s take, and why it sounds convincing until you look closer. We’re not pretending genetics don’t matter at all. We’re questioning the way this message is being framed like it’s settled, like there’s nothing you can do, and like the only real answer is a prescription.
From there, we talked about how accountability can get twisted into shame, but avoiding it completely can turn into a trap. We also went down a few connected rabbit holes, including what “food noise” might actually be, how ultra processed food keeps getting a pass, and why celebrity endorsements and health advice are a messy combo.
Then we shifted into fake food and what’s showing up in real testing, like Florida finding elevated arsenic in a bunch of popular candies and heavy metals in baby formula samples. We ended by zooming out on the bigger pattern: fortified and enriched labels that often hide a long ingredient list, lab made “wild type” salmon and 3D printed eggs, and why we keep seeing money and influence push people toward synthetic fixes instead of simpler, more sustainable habits.
