Description

Darkness at noon. A cry that shakes the soul. A curtain ripped from top to bottom. We walk through Matthew 27:45–56 to see how the cross is not just the site of suffering—it’s the scene where death begins to die. Reading the passage in full, we trace the signs of judgment surrounding Jesus’s crucifixion: the land goes dark, the ground convulses, and the cup of wrath is drained. Then comes the staggering confession from the centurion and the quiet courage of the women who refuse to look away.

From there, we press into the meaning. Jesus truly dies, bearing the penalty sin deserves, yet his surrender is sovereign—he gives up his spirit. The torn veil declares a new covenant reality: direct access to God through Christ, not through a yearly ritual or a human mediator. And in one of Scripture’s most arresting details, tombs open and saints appear after his resurrection, a down payment of the resurrection life promised to all who belong to him. The message is unmissable: death won’t have the last word.

We end with how to live in light of this. Awe is appropriate; trust is necessary; allegiance is the fruit. When fear rises or the body falters, we return to the cross where judgment fell and the way was opened. No supplement needed, no second savior required. If you’ve been carrying guilt or grasping for control, let the torn curtain invite you near and let the opened tombs lift your eyes.
