Description

After 9 years of grad school, I swore off reading until recently. In Season 2 I am excited to review some of my favorite books in the field. In this solo episode, I share my Five Wise points from Christy Harrison's book called The Anti Diet.

  1. She does a beautiful job writing about the roots of diet culture which she found dates back 40,000 years ago. From Ancient Greece and Rome to the Industrial era, Harrison highlights how bodies have become a classist, racist, and sexist issue.
  2. Next, we dive into why diets don't work and why they are a problem.
  3. And we couldn't leave out how the BMI scale was never intended as a diagnostic tool as it doesn't take into account body composition (ie, muscle, bone density), sex, age, ethnicity, or genetics, and nevermind that it fuels weight stigma.
  4. I then dive into a 32 year longitudinal study that erroneously reports "successful" weight loss amongst its participants and how the authors reap financial gain from doing so.
  5. We end with the harsh damage of weight stigma which turns out is worse for your health than actually what you eat.

And not only is this book awesome, Christy Harrison has a top podcast called Food Psych and you can check it out here along with her book and website.
