Workplace burnout isn't just about feeling overwhelmed — there is actual science happening in your body that explains why it's so hard to shake, and understanding it is the first step toward doing something about it. This episode is an expansion of my interview with Lydia Melton on burnout's impact on the P&L (Episode 23), but this time we're going deeper into the physiological and psychological mechanisms behind burnout, why it happens so frequently at work, and what leaders can actually do about it. Fair warning: I get personal in this one.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- The science behind burnout — the three core components of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of personal accomplishment — plus the physiological mechanisms involved including HPA axis dysregulation and chronic cortisol elevation, autonomic nervous system imbalance between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) systems, and neurotransmitter disruptions to serotonin and dopamine
- The 12 workplace causes of burnout — high workload and unrealistic deadlines, lack of control and micromanagement, poor work-life balance and blurred boundaries, inadequate support, job insecurity, insufficient resources and training, role ambiguity, high pressure environments, lack of recognition, personal factors, toxic organizational culture, and change and uncertainty — and why recognizing these in your organization is the only way to start addressing them
- Why caffeine, chronic arousal from mindless scrolling, and misaligned coping mechanisms quietly fuel the physiological cycle of burnout — and how Kerri's personal experience with panic attacks, immune suppression, cortisol-driven weight gain, and therapy led to four years without caffeine and a very different relationship with work
- The FLSA exempt vs. non-exempt classification update and the Department of Labor's salary threshold changes — why if your employees are regularly working overtime, it's almost certainly a workload, staffing, or workflow problem that you need to address before it becomes a compliance issue
- Twelve specific strategies leaders can implement to reduce burnout — promoting work-life balance, managing workloads with realistic deadlines, providing support and resources, fostering a positive culture, encouraging open communication with genuine check-ins, promoting health and wellbeing, leading by example, implementing stress management programs, encouraging peer collaboration, monitoring and redistributing workloads, providing career growth, and addressing workplace conflicts promptly
