A Christmas Special Thomas Babington Macaulay’s view of the 1688 Revolution as a conservative act that secured England’s future stability. By prioritising historical precedent over abstract theory, the English preserved their ancient laws while the rest of Europe suffered through violent upheavals. The sources highlight how the transition to a statutory monarchy ended the dangerous "superstition" of divine right, subordinating the Crown to the law. This shift established a framework for parliamentary supremacy, allowing all subsequent social and political progress to occur within the constitution. Ultimately, Macaulay argues that England escaped the chaos of the nineteenth century specifically because it had completed this "preserving revolution" in the seventeenth.
