“I was just joking.”

Okay...but was anybody else laughing?

Because apparently bullying doesn't disappear when you graduate.

It just gets a LinkedIn account, joins the group chat, discovers subtweeting, and learns how to say “No offense, but...”

This week on Twin Tangents, Anthony and Nalee are unpacking bullying—and quickly discovering this conversation might require a little more self-reflection than either of them planned.

Because whether you were the kid getting picked on, the person doing the picking, the friend who pretended not to notice, or the person who thought of the perfect comeback three years later in the shower...

Most of us have experienced bullying from one side or another.

👉 Audio listeners: the facial expressions and moments of accidental self-incrimination alone might make this one worth watching on YouTube.

We're talking:

🎯 Why does someone become the target? → Insecurity? Jealousy? Being perceived as an easy target? Or does one bully essentially give everyone else permission to pile on?

😬 “I was just joking.” → Sarcasm, teasing, roasting your friends and genuinely trying to embarrass someone aren't the same thing. So where's the line—and who gets to decide when you've crossed it?

🪞 Wait...are WE bullies? → Nothing says personal growth like recording an episode about bullying and realizing bullying your friends might actually be one of your love languages.

🧠 Why do people bully? → Insecurity gets blamed for everything, but what about power, control, attention, peer pressure, wanting approval—or the uncomfortable possibility that sometimes people are just being assholes?

👯 When friendship turns toxic → Sometimes the bully isn't an enemy. It's someone sitting right beside you. If you're always the punchline or someone needs you to feel smaller so they can feel bigger, maybe that's not friendship.

💼 The schoolyard eventually gets cubicles → Cliques. Exclusion. Gossip. Public humiliation. Power trips. Adults don't necessarily stop bullying—they sometimes just get better vocabulary and an HR department.

📱 Cyberbullying & the internet pile-on → Social media gave everyone a microphone and an audience. When does accountability become harassment? And does joining thousands of strangers attacking someone suddenly make it okay?

👀 The people who watch it happen → You might not be making the joke, posting the comment or throwing the punch—but what happens when everybody sees what's happening and nobody says anything?

Somewhere in the middle of all this, Anthony and Nalee are forced to confront an important question:

Are they self-aware adults discussing bullying...or just two bullies who successfully rebranded it as a love language?

The jury is still out.

Because bullying doesn't always look like stealing someone's lunch money.

Sometimes it's the coworker who constantly undermines you.

The friend who always makes you the punchline.

The person hiding cruelty behind sarcasm.

The internet mob convinced that thousands of people attacking one person counts as accountability.

The lockers may disappear after graduation.

But insecurity, power, cruelty, peer pressure and the need to feel superior?

Those can follow people long after school ends.

Quick disclaimer: This episode contains personal bullying stories, questionable friendship dynamics, workplace bullshit, cyberbullying, accidental self-incrimination, and Anthony and Nalee repeatedly attempting to justify why bullying each other is apparently acceptable.

We're not therapists.

We're just two people with microphones realizing “I was only joking” probably isn't the airtight defense we thought it was.

🎙️ Motto of the week:

You can graduate from school.

That doesn't mean you graduated from being an asshole.
