Hermann Hesse’s "Siddhartha", first published in German in 1922, is a philosophical novel set in ancient India around the time of the historical Buddha. It follows the spiritual journey of a young Brahmin named Siddhartha who leaves his privileged home in search of enlightenment, rejecting both traditional religious teachings and the path of pure asceticism. Through encounters with the Buddha, a life of worldly pleasure and wealth, deep personal loss, and finally a quiet existence as a ferryman by a river, Siddhartha comes to realize that true wisdom cannot be taught but must be lived and experienced. Drawing on Hesse’s own fascination with Eastern philosophy and Buddhism, the novel explores themes of self-discovery, the unity of all existence, and the limitations of doctrine, becoming one of the author’s most enduring and widely read works.
