The most unsettling line in Romans 4 might also be the most hopeful: God justifies the ungodly. That single sentence drags us out of performance mode and into the heart of the gospel, where our confidence rests on what God promises and what Christ has done, not on what we can prove. On this Resurrection Sunday message, we keep walking through From Guilty to Glory in the Book of Romans and ask the honest question many people avoid: how is anyone actually made right with God?
We trace Paul’s argument through Abraham’s story and watch the logic land with force. Abraham is counted righteous by faith, not by works, and that “counting” is courtroom and accounting language: God credits righteousness to an account that did not earn it. We also bring in David’s testimony from a psalm of confession, showing the blessing of forgiveness and the staggering promise that God does not impute sin to the one he has justified.
Then we tackle the traps that still catch religious people today: thinking rituals, law keeping, or spiritual effort can add to salvation. Abraham is declared righteous before circumcision and before the law, proving justification by grace through faith for Jews and Gentiles alike. Finally, we connect it all to the resurrection power of God: the One who gives life to the dead raised Jesus our Lord, and that risen Christ is the foundation of our justification.
