Description

Romans 9 doesn’t let us hide behind easy answers. We pick up part two of our From Guilty to Glory series and ask the blunt question Paul raises: why did God choose Israel, and what does that choice teach us about salvation today? What follows is a steady walk through the text that keeps bringing us back to one freeing reality: being made right with God rests on God’s grace, not our bloodline, our track record, or our ability to “earn” a place with him.

We lay out four principles Paul uses to clarify God’s saving work: grace rather than race, promise rather than preference, providence rather than performance, and mercy rather than merit. Along the way we revisit Abraham’s sons and the difference between what humans would naturally choose and what God promised to do. Then we sit with the line that makes many readers flinch, “Jacob I loved, Esau I hated,” and we slow down to handle it with context, Malachi’s timeline, and the biblical way “hate” can function as a contrast of priorities rather than a simplistic claim of arbitrary malice.

We also follow Paul into Moses and Pharaoh, the Exodus plagues, and the hard question everyone eventually asks: if God is sovereign, where does human responsibility fit? Paul’s answer is the potter and clay, and we talk about why that image can actually be hope for people who feel like they’ve ruined their lives, because the master potter can reshape what’s been marred.
