Two Doctors and a Twist — Coffee & Conversation: What Problem Does Career Insurance Solve?

Short description:
With co-host Dr. Jamie away on her honeymoon (congratulations, Dr. Jamie!), Dr. Marilyn Carroll hosts a solo Coffee & Conversation edition. She answers a deceptively simple question: what problem does Career Insurance actually solve? She says most people are expected to manage an entire career without a career management system. Grab your coffee and your notebook.

Episode summary:
Organizations have workforce plans, talent systems, succession plans, and labor market forecasts. Individuals are simply told to "manage your career," with no dashboard showing whether their skills are gaining or losing value. Drawing on a conversation with a fellow passenger on a flight home from D.C., Dr. Carroll shows that careers change for many reasons beyond job loss. Examples include a spouse's relocation, caregiving, a desire to switch fields, or a move into entrepreneurship.

She argues that career management should be continuous, just as performance management has become. She introduces career equity, the idea that "your employer owns the position, you own the career." That equity includes your capabilities, evidence, relationships, reputation, credentials, and adaptability. On AI, her message is to prepare, not fear. The productive economy doesn't disappear. Jobs change, and new demand emerges, as the data center buildout shows for electricians, HVAC technicians, and engineers.

She also names the access-to-adaptation gap. Two equally hardworking employees can end up in very different places five years later because only one had access to training, mentoring, and stretch assignments. Career Insurance is designed to deliver three things: clarity (know where you are), readiness (know what you need next), and mobility (know you can move). It combines personal career intelligence with external workforce intelligence.

Finally, Dr. Carroll announces that Career Insurance is going full throttle. The September MVP grew from 5 to 50 members in one month. She is officially inviting individuals to join the founding community. She is also recruiting coaches, HR professionals, recruiters, educators, workforce professionals, and employers to help build an affordable coaching network and a potential employer benefit.
