Detective Sergeant Joe Friday faces an impossible dilemma: his Army buddy Max Tyler is caught red-handed in an armed robbery that leaves Friday's partner Ben Romero wounded. Despite their friendship, Friday must do his duty and send Tyler to prison. But the story doesn't end there—believing deeply in rehabilitation, Friday becomes Tyler's champion, working tirelessly to help him earn parole, supporting his struggling family, and vouching for his character to prison officials.
The case takes a devastating turn just two months before Tyler's parole hearing when he makes the worst possible choice: escape from San Quentin. His wife Dorothy aids the escape, taking one of their twin boys with them while leaving the other behind with Friday. What follows is a tense manhunt that leads Friday to a remote shack near Santa Maria, where he must confront his friend one final time.
