I recently stumbled across the YouTube channel Soft White Underbelly, created by photographer and filmmaker Mark Laita. Through raw, unfiltered interviews, Mark gives voice to people whose stories are rarely heard—people who have lived through deep trauma, addiction, and brokenness.
One interview stopped me cold.
Mark was interviewing Russ Taff, a once-famous Gospel singer whose music shaped a generation. I knew Russ had struggled with alcohol—but I did not know why.
Russ’ story is moving, gripping, disturbing, and at moments, deeply hopeful. Yet after watching the full interview, I was left with a sobering realization: the hope never fully arrived.
