The idea of what it means to be an American has always been contested. From Frederick Douglass confronting a nation celebrating liberty while enslaving millions, to Japanese Americans imprisoned during WWII, to the civil rights battles that reshaped our laws, the struggle for a more perfect union has never been easy or guaranteed.
Now we face a new kind of threat. Not from outside our borders, but from within the very institutions designed to protect us. When power is concentrated, when checks and balances are dismantled, when truth itself becomes negotiable, that is how a country is destroyed from the inside out.
