Description

This episode looks at a small UK trial of a stem cell scaffold aimed at corneal regeneration. Nine adults with a rare genetic eye disease took part, and the results were clearer for eye surface health than for sight.

You'll learn:
- How the RAFT-OS collagen scaffold carries limbal epithelial stem cells and a stromal cell type
- Why the eye surface score improved from 9.4 to 5.9 at three months
- Why the vision gain stayed uncertain even though sight rose by about five chart lines on average
- What the safety results showed, including a manufacturing change after one serious adverse event
- Why patients took medicines that calm the immune system during the trial
- Why these results do not apply to macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy
- What the planned larger clinical trial still needs to show

Early results are encouraging but do not yet prove restored sight, and a larger controlled study is the next step.
